BDA HOUSE OF DIPLOMACY DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS LUNCHEON: ‘Humanitarian Diplomacy’

Humanitarian diplomacy plays a crucial role in navigating the complex landscapes of ongoing protracted crises, where conflicts, natural disasters, and displacement are increasingly interconnected.

Humanitarian diplomats speak on behalf the most vulnerable groups affected, whose interests wouldn’t necessarily be represented in all fora. By advocating for vulnerable populations, negotiating humanitarian access, and fostering cooperation among diverse stakeholders, humanitarian diplomats ensure that life-saving assistance reaches those in need. In contexts complex crises, we have seen how the needs of affected individuals became central in many political discussions. Humanitarian diplomats’ unique position at the intersection of policy, advocacy, and field operations allows them to bridge the gap between global decision-makers and on-the-ground realities.

However, it is pivotal to find ways to early and consistently integrate this niche expertise in advisory roles for decision-makers, at government-level, or within international organizations and crisis management bodies. Snapshots of the needs on the ground, although well captured by information management agencies and journalists, need to be integrated in strategic fora, by either facilitating regular dialogue between policymakers and field experts, or ensuring the interests of the most vulnerable groups are reflected in high-level negotiations. By valuing their insights and prioritizing inclusivity, the global community can foster more effective, equitable, and sustainable responses to today’s most pressing challenges.

Leveraging stories from Gaza, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Syria, we will foster dialogue on what could be done as first step towards better representation of humanitarian needs within political agendas.
