The global community is currently stuck in a tricky situation, due to the complexity, frequency, and magnitude of various crises, amidst the intense disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With all-out hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, Israel and Palestine, unrests in Sudan and Yemen, and recent revolutions in a number of developing countries by the youth, commonly referred to as the Gen Zs, the world is witnessing some of the worst conflicts since the end of the Second World War. Moreover, the acute erosion of international norms, the scramble for economic resources, and the corruption, hubris, and impunity by the ruling elite, have only exacerbated the demands on an already overstretched eco-system, further resulting in massive inequalities, joblessness, hopelessness, and despair. The cumulative impacts of these issues have led to a more polarized world, casting a shadow on the ambitious pursuit of the Sustainable Developments Goals, targeted for 2030. Against this background, it is important to scrutinize the link between development actors, as purveyors of innovations to intended adopters, and to reflect on the role played by the multifaceted and dynamic disciplines of development communication, diplomacy, and law, in order to seek solutions that are cohesive in both theory and praxis.
During this interactive session, we shall discuss the three concepts of development communication, diplomacy, and law, elaborating how they mutually reinforce each other, to create a hybrid asset that can applied to strengthen institutional structures, making them fit for purpose. We shall then examine the interaction of elements in the three disciplines, to maintain a vibrant conversation.
